An Unlikely Hero

Do we, Filipinos, deserved this kind of a Supreme Court Chief Justice?

1.  One who is branded as a person with no sense of decency when he accepted a midnight appointment of a perceived to be corrupt out going President whose deemed purpose of appointing him is to protect herself from her forthcoming graft cases.

2.  One who appeared to be so arrogant and disrespectful to other branch of government's authority and proceeding as shown on his walk out escape during The Day 40 of the impeachment trial.

3.  One who has the insolent boldness to malign in public a defenseless dead person (Jose Maria Basa 111) just to protect his interest.

4.  One who admitted that he is a lawbreaker himself by not indicating his true assets in his SALN (Statement of Assets Liabilities and Net Worth).

5.  A Chief Justice who is better off a tele-drama King than a chief Justice,

6.  One who portrays himself to be like a saint who would not commit mistake but so good and pointing out other people's mistakes.

7.  One who is simply too good to be true, and whose reasoning are sometimes very insulting to one's intelligence.

8.  And one who indirectly admitted that he is a fool, and by doing so was revealed liar.

My personal answer is NO! But in fairness to the Chief justice, he is not perfect and we are not perfect either; and majority of us are so naive to deserve a perfect Chief justice. Besides, Chief Justice Renato C. Corona and his defense team of lawyers deserve to win the case because they are more determine, cunningly good, and Chief Justice himself seems to be so honest(?) in the last minutes of the trial.

Moreover, it is not for us to decide. But for the prosecutors who clearly were caught off guard and were so afraid of Corona's unconditional Pandora's box like bank account waiver; and who, for whatever reason, suddenly seem to had given up the fight by refusing to hurl not even a single question on the accused. And for the senators who in the final moment was so concern about the "Senate session break", decided to disregard the time factor element of finding the truth, and whom (an ample number of them) I believe had already decided to vote for an acquittal.

I maybe wrong in my assessment, but it's not my primary concern anymore; for so far, I have heard and seen enough. And I hate it when no matter how boring a movie I am watching is, somebody would turn off the whole thing just when it is on its climax and about to end. Nonetheless, we have to decide, the whole world and the next generation of Filipinos are watching. And what would might be the implication and world's impression of an acquittal verdict? This one is a sad reality, " The Filipinos did not convict an impeached crooked Supreme Court Chief Justice; because, practically, everyone of them are crooked like him".

Chief Justice Corona's last words before he run away in the day 40 impeachment hearing was, "I am not a thief, I am not a lawbreaker, and I am not a fool". He is saying that, if he would unconditionally surrender his bank account waiver, he is a fool.  And a fool indeed, for that is what he exactly did on his second day at the impeachment court.

Filipinos are kind- hearted-fools; and even by just indirectly admitting that he is a fool, the Chief Justice became an overnight hero. But, because of his indirect admission, his closing phrase should be rephrase, and it should be written like this. "I am a lawbreaker, and I am a fool".

Honesty, most especially in the Philippine Government, is not a lonely word but a dead word; ironically, for Renato C. Corona the remaining factor that keeps him embattledly alive. His impeachment day 41's last word, "This is the least I can do for the Filipino people", still referring to the waiver, which made him indirectly admit (and this time sealed his admission) that he is a fool.

No one is perfect; that is why, personally, I have a high tolerance level on lawbreakers and fools who are honest for they can still be reformed. Worst are those who are grossly sick but are thinking that they are fine and in good shape. With two heart bypass surgery, I don't know whether the Chief Justice' heart would handle a guilty verdict. With deep sympathy for the Chief Justice I still post this blog, because like him, this is the least I can do for the Filipino people.
